Preparing for your semen analysis

  • Abstain from sexual intercourse/masturbation for three to five days. Note that shorter abstinence periods may result in low sperm counts, while longer abstinence periods may result in low motility.
  • Wash hands and genitals thoroughly before sample production.
  • Produce sample into a sterile specimen pot labelled with name, date of birth, date and time of ejaculation. Alternatively, produce sample into a non-toxic condom supplied by the clinic and place into a biohazard bag labelled with name, date of birth, date and time of ejaculation (contraceptive condoms are unsuitable due to spermicidal activity).
  • Samples produced at home must be kept warm and delivered to the clinic within 1 hour of production. Samples produced off site will cool with time which will reduce sperm motility.
  • Following this assessment, a consultation with our leading fertility specialists will be organised to review your medical and fertility history. Medical and/or lifestyle advice will be discussed if necessary.
